The purpose of the program is to work with local soil and water conservation districts to close inactive animal waste lagoons across the state to prevent any potential for damage to the environment.
Over $5 million in funding from the North Carolina Environmental Enhancement Grants Program through the July 2000 NC Attorney General’s Agreement with Smithfield Foods Inc.
With outside contributions and technical assistance, the program has leveraged over $6 million.
The program has funded the closure of 249 inactive animal waste lagoons, properly managing over 290 million gallons of waste, including over 4 million pounds of Phosphorus and over 1 million pounds of nitrogen.
