Soil Health: The Mobile Soils Classroom

Purpose: The Mobile Soils Classroom is a soil health education outreach program for kids and adults of the NC Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts. Demonstrations include lessons in soil properties, common state soil profiles, understanding soil and water interactions, understanding soil erosion and how the soil is a living biosphere.

Support: The initiative is currently supported by an EPA Region 4 Environmental Education Grant. Former supporters include Duke Energy, NC Agriculture Development and Farmland Preservation Trust Fund, NC Tobacco Trust Fund Commission, Smithfield Hog Production Division, NC Farm Credits Association, Bayer Crop Science, Monsanto, and several conservation partners. Funds raised to date by the Foundation total $146,500.

Accomplishments: The program includes 5 regional trailers and 3 rainfall simulators. Conservation partners regularly provide training for staff and update program resources. Watch this YouTube video that includes an introduction to some of the demonstrations!
